I found myself agreeing with this article re. his prose style. It's flashes of beauty surrounded by overlong, overcomplex arabesques of prose. Confessions is, I think, his best work, if only because I think his difficult life and the descriptions of Georgian-era drug culture make the density of the prose worth it.
